A New Teacher's Guide to Addressing Off-Task Behavior

Purpose

This strategy guide is intended for new teachers or teachers returning to the profession in need of a refresher! By clearly laying out ten unique strategies for addressing off-task and challenging behavior, teachers have an easy-to-access resource at their fingertips. The strategies include both low key interventions as well as explicit instructions that are beneficial in creating a positive and productive classroom before or in response to challenging behaviors.

Key Background Knowledge

In order to implement successful behavioral strategies, it is valuable to build a deeper knowledge of the science behind human behavior. By looking at the ABC model and the four functions of behavior, the reasons behind specific behavior become more evident. Also, by learning about the cognitive role of executive functioning, teachers can make informed accomodations to aid in the improvement of key executive functioning skills. Finally, by recognizing our implicit biases and incorporating identity and community building exercises, teachers can foster a culturally responsive classroom where all students feel a sense of belonging. This feeling of safety and belonging is proven to aid in the prevention of challenging and off-task behaviors.
