Having a culturally responsive classroom is key to creating a sense of belonging for all students. Specific strategies can help foster relationships, celebrate individuals' identities, and in turn, prevent or improve challenging behavior. Teaching and putting an emphasis on SEL, or Social Emotional Learning skills, along with data collection is valuable to a safe, equitable classroom climate for all.
It is key that we recognize that we all have implicit bias and need to be aware that significant racial discrepancies still exist within the American education system.
A study was done in California, where researchers looked at a variety of data regarding disciplinary referrals in a diverse urban school district. Some key findings include:
Both racial gaps in staff biases and in disciplinary referrals contribute to racial disparities and suspensions.
A small number of staff account for the majority of the overall disciplinary actions and racial disparities.
Teachers of the same race significantly reduce the likelihood of a student receiving a referral.
These findings all illustrate the point that inequities are certainly present and as teachers we need to continuously promote equitable behavior management practices in our classrooms.
