The Four Functions of Behavior provide a way to distinguish potential reasons for why a behavior challenge occurs. Behaviors serve two functions: an attempt to get something or an attempt to get away from something. Understanding these different functions can help teachers better understand why behavior is occuring as well as to create a plan for how to address it.
Seeking attention from adults or other children
Example: whining, getting others to laugh, etc.
Trying to avoid or get away from something
Example: running away, head down on desk
Seeking access to a desired activity or item
Doing something in order to get what they want
Example: scream at toy store, complete chores quickly to go play
Seeking some kind of internal sensation or removing an undesired sensation
Example: scratching, rock back and forth to de-stimulate senses
